RECENT COURSES WORKING WITH LIVING WILLOWDespite torential rain and gale force winds, our novice willow workers created a strong and very lovely living willow arbour. Lusi taught the basics from staking the rods to latice work for the walls, how to make leashes and also windows. We feared that due to the winds, the willow would break but it proved it's worth and stood strong. Since then, it has even started to shoot. Willow is such a pliable and strong material and once you have mastered some of the basic techniques, you can be quite creative and it then becomes a very useful resource indeed! Our 'working with willow' courses run each winter. Please contact us if you are interested. THE BARN'The Barn' is an ongoing project and with the help of volunteers and course participants, we are slowly reconstructing it in the hope to use it again. It is a small stone building previously housing animals or a simple dwelling , part of a group of buildings lived in by the Carey family and neighbours until early 1900s. Since then it has been taken over by bracken and Fushia, however we started clearing in October 07 when we had our first stonewalling workshop. We were able to dig out the foundation stones and begin reconstructing the walls. We are keen to keep things as natural as possible here so we used un-quarried natural stone and used a traditional lime mortar. Through these workshops we hope that participants can learn building techniques that have less impact on the environment and that fit with the landscape. We also hope that this will preserve and promote traditional knowledge and practices.
